По его словам, в России планируется развивать такое направление, как внедрение в библиотеках так называемых “ридеров” – электронных книг. Такие ридеры, пояснил министр, содержат до 2 тыс. произведений, и их можно читать практически как книгу, перелистывая электронные страницы.

Авдеев отметил, что экономически ридеры выгоднее, чем книга притом, что книга стоит 200 рублей, а ридер – около 1,5 тыс. долларов. Однако, если учесть, что он вмещает порядка 2 тыс. произведений, получается, что ридер в 10 раз дешевле книг, объяснил министр.

На днях глава Минкультуры уже сообщал, что в России вскоре появятся библиотеки с электронными книгами.

“Техническая революция заставляет нас переходить на новые технологии библиотечного дела. Это новые носители. Мы сейчас будем делать несколько экспериментальных библиотек, где будут использованы так называемые “ридеры”, – сказал Авдеев 1 декабря в Москве на Всероссийском конгрессе соотечественников.

Он пояснил, что речь идет об электронной книге с иллюстрациями, художественным шрифтом, в памяти которой может быть заложено 2 тыс. книг.

“Следующее, что мы собираемся сделать – оцифровка книг”, – сказал Авдеев.

“Книга стала товаром, причем, товаром дорогим. Мы столкнулись с проблемой формирования российских библиотек. В России 130 тыс. библиотек, из них 46 тыс. публичных. Государство уже не в состояние отвечать за их комплектование”, – отметил министр.

Time Out creates eBooks for city guides, takes the Murdoch paid-for route | Tnooz

Just days after Travellerspoint revealed its simplistic, on-demand email city and country guides, social and travel publishing giant Time Out unveils its own take on the on-the-go guides.

The publisher’s popular city guides are in the process of being formatted for eReaders, Blackberry, PDA and web and will available for download from its own store and other online retailers this month.

Time Out says the eBooks will be fully interactive and include the usual mapping functions and ability to add bookmarks and make notes against the content.

The digital books are being produced by Easypress Technologies.

Kicking off with guides to London, Venice, Barcelona, New York, Cape Town and Paris, content is taken from its existing guidebooks and will cost the user around £12.99 per edition.

The remaining guides in the series will be added during 2010.

Time Out isn’t the only travel content publisher to have produced digitised versions of its books (Lonely Planet has pick and mix chapters for PDF and its well publicised push onto Kindle), but the pattern continues of charging for content when professional writers are involved, despite the fact that most scribes would have been paid when the hard copy versions were produced.

The counterpoint is that many smaller operations will happily give away content in various forms despite the resources required from a technology perspective and with some rudimentary editing of user generated content.

Taiwan Plans to Roll out E-readers in Schools – PC World

Taiwan’s Ministry of Education plans to offer e-readers to schoolkids on the island next year as part of efforts to further digitize schools and promote reading.
The e-readers are part of a five-year, NT$50 billion (US$1.55 billion) budget earmarked for information technology in classrooms. Currently the ministry is reviewing designs for e-readers and doesn’t yet know how many it will purchase for next year, a representative said.
The only e-reader displayed at the Ministry of Education’s booth at the IT Month exhibition in Taipei on Monday was a color e-reader designed by Aiptek International for young children. The Aiptek inColor e-reader has an 8-inch color screen and 1GB of flash memory for storage. It comes with 20 multimedia e-books pre-installed and costs NT$6,900 (US$213) in Taiwan, according to Hsu Fang-chi, a media representative at Aiptek.

Al Greco, Professor of Marketing at Fordham University’s Graduate School of Business Administration, presented data he has complied on the ebook market in the US to seminar attendees. These data are drawn from a variety of sources, including the US Department of Commerce, the US Department of Education, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the US Department of Treasury, the Federal Reserve Bank, the Congressional Budget Office, and the National Bureau of Economic Research. Professor Greco’s data are must-read information for anyone interested in the ebook market, and are the only data I have seen that breaks out the US market by industry segment.

According to Greco, book publishing (print and electronic) in the US is a $35 billion dollar industry. This year, he forecasts that ebooks will account for 5% of that revenue, or $1.76 billion. Of that $1.76 billion, trade books account for 8.6%, or $151 million; K-12 accounts for 8.1% ($143 million); higher education accounts for 6.9% ($122 million); and university presses account for 0.4% ($7.7 million). Professional and scholarly publishing titles represent 75.9% of the US ebook market, or $1.33 billion.

In other words, professional and scholarly ebooks account for more than three times the rest of the US ebook market combined.

Sources report that over the first half of the year, eBook sales at Random House have increased by 400 percent.

According to a leaked report obtained by Crain’s NY, digital book sales at the company have increased dramatically. Despite impressive growth, the company called it “an incubatory period” for the digital book industry–a fraction of the company’s overall revenues.

Here’s more from the article: “sales of its Kindle e-books through September 2009 came to $22.6 million, an increase of almost 700% over the $2.9 million in revenue that the Kindle generated during the same period in 2008. The Lost Symbol was a big part of that growth. Published Sept. 15, the thriller sold 100,000 e-books its first week out, or about 5% of total sales for the book. In the first half of 2009, Random House e-book revenue grew by 400%, says a spokesman.”

Google supporting filetype:epub « JURN blog

Google is now supporting the filetype:epub search modifier, for finding ebooks in the popular epub format. Google has fairly limited coverage of such files so far, at a reported 54,000 hits. Searches for Iliad and Wonderland only show a few epub editions of each.

Плагин пока очень простенький. Но автор над ним работает – мгновенно откликнулся на замечания и пофиксил баг. Всё работает и есть куда развиваться. К не очень большому набору программных ридеров epub добавился ещё один. Учитывая распространенность Firefox, такое решение может оказаться одним из самых массовых для PC и ноутбуков.
