EA Extranet: “EA ANNOUNCES FLIPS ON THE NINTENDO DS”

Guildford, UK – 9th October 2009 – Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announces the development of FLIPS™, an innovative new book range created for the Nintendo DS™. FLIPS has been designed to give children of all ages a fun new way to read their favorite books. EA has worked with some of the UK’s leading publishers of children’s books and magazines, including Egmont and Penguin Publishing, to bring modern classic titles from critically acclaimed authors such as Cathy Cassidy, Eoin Colfer, Enid Blyton, and the various writers from the popular boys series, ‘Too Ghoul for School’ to the DS. Each FLIPS title features multiple books and the first four titles will be exclusively released on Nintendo DS in the UK on the 4th December 2009.
Each FLIPS title featuring six to eight books will be sold separately with an RRP of £24.99.

AUO – новый игрок на рынке букридеров

FT.com / Technology – AUO to kindle rivalry with half-price e-readers

Taiwan’s AU Optronics has thrown down the gauntlet to its rivals, saying it expects to be able to halve the cost of electronic readers, popularised by Amazon’s Kindle devices, within two years.
The world’s third-biggest flat-panel maker has begun shipping six- to nine-inch-sized e-readers to a number of clients, according to CT Liu, a senior vice-president of consumer product displays at AUO.
The Taiwanese company is “in talks [to supply e-readers] to nearly everyone you can think of”, including China Mobile and a number of European brands, Mr Liu told the Financial Times.

Производитель “книгоматов” договорился с Google

The Associated Press: Google to reincarnate digital books as paperbacks

Каталог оцифрованных Google Books книг, находящихся в общественном достоянии, будет доступен пользователям микротипографских комплексов Espresso, производимых компанией On Demand Books. Это 2 млн книг, которые можно будет распечатать за 5-7 минут. Рекомендованная цена 300-страничной книги – $8, из которых $1 пойдет на благотворительность. В случае одобрения коллективного соглашения Google и Американской авторской ассоциации, каталог пополнится и книгами-сиротами.
Стоимость машины – $100 тыс. Возможен лизинг. Ресурс – 60 тыс книг в год. Кажется, очень маленьким, но гордым книготорговцам можно присмотреться к этой машинке внимательнее.

Amazon опубликовал исходники Kindle

Amazon Releases Kindle Source Code | Techgeist

Amazon has released the source code for all models of the Kindle. This means that we can now look at the code which makes the Kindle, Kindle 2, and the Kindle DX tick. The code can be found here on the Amazon site. So the question for all the curious minds out there is why did Amazon do this.

Просто опубликовал. Но никакого явного разрешения использовать. Никаких тебе GPL, СС и прочей опенсорсной ерундистики. Типа – знакомьтесь. Зачем — непонятно.

Mobipocket выходит из конкуренции ePub и Amazon

The end seems to be near for the Mobipocket ebook standard. On the sign up page of Mobipocket Ebookbase, the following text is displayed:

Effective September 2009, we will no longer open new accounts for publishers to sell titles through the Kindle Store or MobiPocket.com. If you have an existing account, there will be no change and you can continue to upload and sell titles using Ebookbase. New publishers with a US address and bank account can sign up to sell ebooks in the Kindle store via our self-service publishing channel at http://dtp.amazon.com

Now that many ereaders switch to ePub, and cannot read their DRM’ed Mobipocket ebooks anymore, and Ebookbase is not accepting new Mobipocket publishers, it looks like Mobipocket is exit. Too bad, Amazon could have done much more with the format.

Создатели собирают деньги, которые платят пользователи только если контент отпускается на свободу. Пока только музыка. Но обещали и книги. Фишка в том, что деньги собираются фиксированное время, и пока они не соберутся – никто не платит ни гроша – фактически, это подписка. Система только проверит достоверность кредитки или счета в Paypal. Получается, что это та же схема, которая используется logos.com для своей христианской литературы, но только попроще – и для всего.

Asus готовит букридер с двумя экранами за 100 фунтов

Unlike current ebook readers, which take the form of a single flat screen, the Asus device has a hinged spine, like a printed book. This, in theory, enables its owner to read an ebook much like a normal book, using the touchscreen to “turn” the pages from one screen to the next. It also gives the user the option of seeing the text on one screen while browsing a web page on the other. One of the screens could also act as a virtual keypad for the device to be used like a laptop. Whereas current ebook readers have monochrome screens, the Asus would be full colour. The maker says it may also feature “speakers, a webcam and a mic for Skype”, allowing cheap phone calls over the internet.
